Porté par des juifs séfarades d'Afrique du Nord, c'est un nom berbère qui correspond à Jacob (transcription arabe `aqnîn). Variantes : Aknin, Aknoun. Le nom a été porté au début du XIIIe siècle par Joseph Ibn Aknine, né à Ceuta et mort à Alep en 1226.
